At the time, I thought training at a gym was the only way to go and that the fancier, more hi-tech the machine or gadget…the better your results will be.
After all, my fitness certifications, other personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, and most fitness gurus ALL recommended these methods… so who was I to challenge them?
Well today, over six years later, I see things much differently.
Through the hundreds and hundreds of people I have been fortunate enough to help, and thousands and thousands of hours of testing every imaginable workout possible, I have discovered that there is in fact a better way to train, a simpler way, a way that DOESN'T require going to a gym or buying a trendy gadget or machine.
This "better way" involved 3 methods of exercise that were by no means new, however, I found that most trainers either ignored them or simply had no clue how to effectively use them. (at least not the way I did.)
I'm talking about training with your own bodyweight, training with elastic bands and training with free weights...all of which can easily be done from your own home.
These methods have helped me experience phenomenal success and after countless sessions training myself and my clients over the years, I have quickly concluded these 3 forms of training to be the BEST ways to work out and build the body you want for sure.
I found them to be FAR more effective than ANY fancy equipment at a gym, ANY expensive home-gym that tries to mimic the same thing or ANY trendy gadget, gizmo or gimmick that tries to pass itself off as the "the next best thing."
The reasons gyms, machines and gadgets aren't competent types of training is because they all lack 3 critical factors that make an exercise program completely successful.
These are proven factors I have discovered to be true when training myself and clients again and again and again. There is no doubt in my mind these factors will make or break your program.
While gyms, machines and gadgets may have 1 or even 2 of these 3 essential factors...NONE of them contain all 3. And I can promise you, missing just 1 of the following elements is all it takes for your program to fail miserably - guaranteed.
Here they are...
1. Your Program Must be Convenient.
This is exactly why I no longer workout myself or my clients at a gym. They're the antithesis of convenient. What's the point in having to drive to and from a gym when you can achieve same (if not better) results from your own home or anywhere else other than a gym? They're completely unnecessary.
The only reason most people believe "gyms" or "clubs" are the best place to workout is because the media and huge corporate chains (which shall remain nameless) have brainwashed you for years and years into believing this is somehow true. It's not.
The REAL truth is...all you need is a form of resistance and gravity placed against your body's muscles to put together an effective training program. If the resistance and gravity is progressive in nature …you'll get results. Period. You don't need a gym to achieve this effect.
Now, in addition to the tiresome commute gyms create, another factor that makes gyms inconvenient is the fact that their always crowded.
So instead of focusing on your workout (like you should be), you end up being more distracted and having to worry about someone being in your way. And if you work out during peak gym hours, well, good luck even getting a couple exercises in.
There are MANY other factors that make gyms inconvenient that I could write a whole book on, but the bottom line is, gyms waste hours upon hours of your precious time that could otherwise be used to enjoy more meaningful things in your life…such as spending time with your significant other, kids, friends and so forth.
There's no reason you should NOT be done with your workout in 30-45 minutes and be able to go about your day. If you're spending 30-45 minutes (or more) in preparation, ie, driving to and from a gym, waiting around, etc., in addition to your actual workout...I think you'd agree it doesn't make sense to stick to it. If you were to do the math - that's almost 5 ½ hours of wasted time a week. It's a no-brainer.
2. Your Program Must be Practical.
I primarily train women. And if you were to survey all of the women I've trained in my career, EVERY ONE of them would tell you they can't stand machines, gadgets, gizmos or gimmicks...primarily because they're intimidated by them or have no clue how they work.
Well, can you blame them?
I mean, why should they have to remember a dozen different ways to adjust a complicated machine or fancy gadget to simply lift their legs or arms? Through my experience, every woman I have trained feels these devices are not a practical means to get into shape or something they're going to stick to as a regular lifestyle.
All machines and gadgets do is add to more confusion and are the reason why many women don't follow a consistent resistance/strength training program at all. They would much rather hop on a tread mill, elliptical machine or do an aerobics class instead.
3. Your Program Must Have Variety.
You could argue that gyms have a ton of variety and I would agree with you. But I don't care howmany workout options you have at your disposal...again, you're NOT going to stick to it if it's inconvenient. Period. End of story. (Now, if you're someone who enjoys driving to and spending all day in a gym, well, then be my
guest.)
As far as universal home-gym machines, gadgets and gimmicks go like popular ones such as the Bowflex®, Crossbow®, Total Gym®, and others, to be fair, they do offer some variety, but the only variety would be the option to work different muscle groups of your body…but that's pretty much where it ends.
Since the resistance for each one of these machines stays the same (the Bowflex® and Crossbow® machines incorporate rod resistance while The Total Gym® uses cables), your body's muscles will EASILY adapt to these training protocols and you'll rapidly risk hitting a plateau with your program.
This leads to you becoming frustrated and the reason they immediately start to collect dust and turn into glorified clothes racks. I've seen it happen time and time again. (You may have one of these machines sitting in your basement right now.)
Not only that, but these machines and gadgets do not work your body naturally. The movements are very awkward and obscure. They do not work your body's muscles in their full range of motion. This of course limits your muscle development and keeps you from seeing results - not to mention building a body that isn't functional. Not good.
