Questions and Answers with Nadia Melton

Below Nadia explains how she got into the business of personal training, her overall approach with clients, her fitness philosophies and more.

Q: Why did you choose to become a personal trainer?

A:
Having been a professional dancer I had my share of injuries. I also had a vast amount of experience in the rehabilitation of those exercises. That led me to seek methods of prevention and strengthening. After several years working in rehab I realized patients needed more guidance in their exercise regiment. Learning how to stay strong and exercise correctly would greatly decrease the amount of patients we were seeing in rehab from overuse injuries and weekend warrior syndrome.

Q: How are you different then other personal trainers? What is your specialty?

A:
I consider my self different from other trainers because of my extensive background in sports and rehabilitation. I have numerous specialties most notably my kickboxing certification and my ability to help transition post rehab patients to a gym setting.

Q: What is your biggest challenge that you face when training clients?

A:
My biggest challenge is getting my client to see their potential when they have had setbacks, either by injury or just personal. Sometimes we set ourselves up for failure, demanding that everything happen at once. My food will change dramatically, my workouts will be everyday etc. Becoming healthy takes time and is challenging. That's why I am here, to push you, support you, and encourage you thru all you do!

Q: How do you deal with clients who aren't serious?

A:
A sit down, truthful talk. I need to know why things are going the way they are going. Are the times we are training wrong? Do you not like the type of training we are doing? Are you confused about the right kinds of foods to eat? Lots of time it ends up being something going on in their life that has nothing to do with training or eating. Other times it's just time to change our approach to training and/or eating.

Q: What is the most important component to personal training that you advocate to clients?

A:
Your want and desire. I can do everything I know how to do but if you don't want it, it won't happen.

Q: What are your strengths as a trainer? weaknesses?

A:
I train along a wide spectrum. I try different techniques, weights, medicine balls, tubes. Whatever I can incorporate. My weakness: sometimes getting stuck in a rut because when a method of training is working I hate to change it up. Variety is the spice of training we always need to learn new things and try new ways of doing things.

Q: What do you think of the ever popular Atkins Diet?

A:
Hate it, plain and simple. Any time you take something completely out of your diet you are setting yourself up for failure. There are no quick fixes to eating right. It's combination of portion control, balancing your diet, and incorporating new healthy foods you have been avoiding.

Q: What question do you come across most with clients?

A:
Usually, why am I not losing weight? I eat right and exercise what am I doing wrong?

Q: Who is your favorite fitness author?

A:
Mark Verstegen, he recently wrote "Core Performance". It's a great book and covers all aspects of training. Pick it up if you get a chance, it's a good read!

Q: Who has been your greatest success story?

A:
Crystal, she's a young mother who came to me because she had been working out and not seeing any results. She had never worked with a trainer before and was really unsure if there were any benefits to it. She gave me a chance and in 5 weeks she had lost 10 lbs., 13 inches, and 3% body fat. She had also learned the value of having a trainer to push her thru her workouts. Until working with me she had never monitored her intensity levels, changed up her exercises, or tried more than 1-3 free weight exercises. We incorporated more cardio, medicine balls, 1 minute intervals etc. Now we are working on her diet and eating habits.
