Questions and Answers with Terrell Gairy

Below Terrell explains how he got into the business of personal training, his overall approach with clients, his fitness philosophies and more.

Q: Why did you choose to become a personal trainer?

A:
I chose to become a personal trainer because I get a true joy in helping individuals reach their goals. Whether it is in or out of the gym, I am always willing to help.

Q: How are you different then other personal trainers? What is your specialty?

A:
While a lot of trainers stick to basic weight lifting guidelines to reach their client goals, I like to take a different approach. I believe there is more than one way to reach your goal then doing the same repetitive exercise. There is not one area that I specialize in, but if I had to pick, it would be weight loss.

Q: What is your biggest challenge that you face when training clients?

A:
My biggest challenge would be having the client understand that they will not and cannot change their body overnight.

Q: How do you deal with clients who aren't serious?

A:
I try to find new ways to motivate them. I don't believe in giving up on my clients.

Q: What is the most important component to personal training that you advocate to clients?

A:
Dedication, Dedication, Dedication. My clients must be dedicated. That is all I ask of them.

Q: What are your strengths as a trainer? weaknesses?

A:
My strengths would have to that I am very determined in getting my clients to their goals. I am also very down to earth; I like to give clients the truth without sugar coating it. My weakness is that I don't believe in giving up on my clients. Sometimes the client just doesn't want "it" anymore. I guess I really want to see them succeed.

Q: What do you think of the ever popular Atkins Diet??

A:
I personally think that every diet will work. It is designed to work...if you stick to it. However, most people don't which is why they tend to revert back to their original state.

Q: What question do you come across most with clients?

A:
How long will it take to reach my goal?

Q: Who is your favorite fitness author?

A:
I can't say I have a favorite author? I read a lot of material, but I can't think of one that really stands out.

Q: Who has been your greatest success story?

A:
I had this one client who I have been training for six months. They had never been very active, but were real serious about losing weight. This individual was very motivated. Not only did they not miss a training session, but also they were never late either. To make a long story short, they went from being 207lbs to 134lbs, lowered their blood pressure and participated in the Peachtree road race.

Q: What is your advice for clients first starting a fitness program?

A:
Take this time to learn your body. Learn what works for it and learn what doesn't.

Q: What type of training do you prefer, one-on-one or group? Why?

A:
I enjoy them both. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other. It is what my client feels more comfortable doing.

Q: What are your personal goals for the future?

A:
I ultimately want to open my own ranch where clients will be able to vacation there for a length of time to reach their personal goals.
