Roy Englebach - CPTRoy Englebach, CPT

I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to the United States before the age of one. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, I quickly became an avid sports fan, particularly baseball. Along with baseball, my other passion growing up was with the martial arts. The martial arts is something that will always be a part of me, as well as baseball. I played competitive baseball well into my adult years. And yes, hitting a baseball is as hard as it looks.

My passion for athletics, and curiosity of the human body led me to attend the National Personal Training Institute in Falls Church, Virginia. Here, I obtained a better understanding of the physics of the human body and how to train it. The human body is the most complex and exquisite machine on the planet. I am never surprised by what it can be pushed to do.

My professional career in personal training has consisted mostly of in home training. I don’t have anything against gyms, but I have come to feel that in home training can be more intense and effective. The client and trainer relationship will flourish in this atmosphere, as no one is inhibited by the crowd in a gym. I welcome all shapes and sizes, as well as ages.

Here's What Clients Have To Say About Roy...

Jim,

It was definitely the right decision to hire a personal trainer, especially an in-home trainer. "It's been about 4 weeks and I can already see a difference in the way my clothes fit and in the way I feel!" Roy's been great. As a police officer, my schedule can be pretty hectic and changes frequently. Roy has been very flexible in setting workout times that work with my schedule.

Alan Cawood - Mount Airy, MD

Hi Jim,

Things are going great! Roy has been abolutely wonderful and I'm really seeing results!" I'm just starting my second series of the Total Body Makeover program and plan to stay with it and with Roy. He's really terrific and very motivating!

Thanks,

Georgina Slavoff - Gaithersburg, MD

Roy is a great trainer. I feel much stronger and more fit since I've been seeing him. "I can tell that my upper arms have more shape and tone than when I started!" Thanks so much for everything!

Susan Snyder - Walkersville, MD

Hi Jim,

Things are going really good. I am right now 13.5lbs lighter and hoping i can keep it up for an additional 40lbs to go. My diet i have to keep in check all of the time. Roy has taught me how to not have to go to the gym to workout. My biggest struggle was when to fit the gym in and i think i will keep it up by working out in the comforts of my own home on days when i dont feel like going to the gym. "Just the other day when the weather was bad i put on my gym clothes and worked out at home without having Roy there. It's amazing what you can accomplish at home! All in all i am very happy with the results so far!"

Jennifer Wurzel - Germantown, MD
Jim:

"Hooking up with your company and Roy was a great decision. I feel so much better and motivated!" It's a complete turn around for me. Although I still have a way to go (you can't undo years of damage in 8 weeks) I finally feel like it's actually possible to do this. Roy is great. I find him to be very motivating without being intimidating as I had originally feared. Thanks!

Chris Remsburg - Jefferson, MD

Dear Jim,

Thank you for your care and concern. I am very happy with Roy. He is very professional, very knowledgeable - and a great listener! "I am extremely happy with my decision to train 5 days a week for 6 weeks. It is a built-in accountability that I have not been able to find within myself the past 5 years!" I've already referred one of my friends to check out your service! By the way, I have also been enjoying your Free Success Tips Newsletter!

Sincerely,

Nancy Davis - Springfield, VA

Jim, Everything is going great! My muscles curse him every day but I definitely look forward to the workout (which is a 1st in 40 years). I am feeling better everyday! "Here's to spending the money on getting fit instead of lipo!" Thanks!

Nancy Beasley - Frederick, MD

Hi Jim, Roy is fabulous (I couldn't be more pleased with him--am happy it worked out like it did) and while I've been a challenge because of my less than wonderful knees, he's managed to work me very hard. "The workouts make me feel fantastic, and I'm sleeping better than I ever have!" Thanks very much for the inquiry!

Laura Hunter - Fairfax, VA

Jim, Thank you for checking in once again. Jonathan and I are doing well. "We enjoy our workouts very much!" I want to tell you that Roy is great and I would do this training with him again! Again thanks for checking in!

Julianne Tomaszewski - Arlington, VA

Hello Jim, I can tell you that the training has been GREAT for both me and my husband! Roy is excellent and he pushes me to do better with every session. "Not only does he help us do well when he is training us, but he also gives us instructions for our "off" days as well!" Thanks!

Edda Salas-Garay - Frederick, MD

Hi Jim, I am doing extremely well! Training is going well. "I have improved my strength and endurance. My energy level and sleep cycle has improved also!!" Roy ensures my workout is at a challenging level and even keeps me entertained. I appreciate his encouragement (nice way to say... Roy does not listen to me whine).

I appreciate you supporting my health goals. Thanks so much!

SM - New Market, MD

Hi Jim, It's going great!! "I already feel/look different and am so excited about how fit I'll be once the sessions are over." Roy is awesome!! I have nothing but the nicest things to say about him...I will totally recommend you guys to my friends! Thanks for getting in touch.

Kalyani Tanna - Silver Spring, MD

Hey Jim, Things are going very well, Roy can really kick my A**!!! "I am noticing slight changes and definitely feeling a lot better AND believe it or not I am actually sleeping better!" That has been such a blessing, I've had a horrible sleep pattern for over a year, meaning I was getting about 4-5 hrs of sleep a night. Now it's pretty consistent at 6-7 a night!!! Again, it's going very well and I'm glad I'm doing this for myself! Thanks for the check-in!

Questions and Answers with Roy Englebach

Below Roy explains how he got into the business of personal training, his overall approach with clients, his fitness philosophies and more.

Q: Why did you choose to become a personal trainer?

A:
This was the logical progression for me in my career and interests in the human body.

Q: How are you different then other personal trainers? What is your specialty?

A:
I can't speak for all trainers, but I believe I'm different in that I don't believe in a rigid plan. My workouts are always varied. My specialty is circuit training to improve endurance, and achieve weight loss.

Q: What is your biggest challenge that you face when training clients?

A:
My biggest challenge is trying to convince them that they need to eat to lose.

Q: How do you deal with clients who aren't serious?

A:
A line must be drawn. For as much as I can yell, kick, and scream, the client must come to terms that they have to do it for themselves because they want it.

Q: What is the most important component to personal training that you advocate to clients?

A:
As much as I hate to steal something from Nike, I believe they say it best. Just do it.

Q: What are your strengths as a trainer? weaknesses?

A:
My biggest strength as a personal trainer is making the client feel like they are my only client. My weakness is going past the allotted time for the session.

Q: What do you think of the ever popular Atkins Diet?

A:
Although nutrition can be like politics in that everyone has an opinion, I believe strongly that "Atkins" is a potentially dangerous fad. Carbohydrates fuel the bodies most powerful and enduring energy systems.

Q: What question do you come across most with clients?

A:
Are you sure I can eat this much and still lose body fat?

Q: Who is your favorite fitness author?

A:
Pat Croce. You may know him as being the owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, but he started his career as a personal trainer.

Q: Who has been your greatest success story?

A:
A young lady named Sunitha Mathews. She wanted to look good before going to India to see her family. In six weeks, she lost several inches off her waist, and toned her upper body and legs.

Q: What is your advice for clients first starting a fitness program?

A:
Don't get into the habit of weighing yourself, eat many meals throughout the day, and stay the course.

Q: What type of training do you prefer, one-on-one or group? Why?

A:
Definitely one on one. I want the client to feel like everything we do is personalized for them.

Q: What are your personal goals for the future?

A:
I would like to continue school, as well as continue to train. I would also like to have a book published.
