Ready...Set...Take ACTION!

by Jim Coughlin

I know you've been getting a lot of motivational stuff from me lately, but in all my years as a personal trainer, this key component IS the difference between getting results or NOT.

So if you're sick of reading this type of information, too bad...it's not for you anyway.

Now, for those of you who want to have a body to die for, energy like a 12-year old, strength like a bear or a life filled with unlimited happiness...Well then, keep on reading because what I've got cooked up for you today is something truly special.

I interviewed Deborah Godes, a client who has been a huge success with personal training.  Seriously, if you want a blue print for getting amazing results with your fitness routine...listen very carefully to what Deborah has to say.  If you do, I promise you'll be successful.

Here is the interview...

Jim Coughlin: What was your experience with fitness and health prior to meeting me?

Deborah Godes: It was pretty variable. There was a time when I was in good shape but in the past three years, I had not been working out. I had a child and had a hard time finding time for me between working and taking care of my family.

JC: What were your reasons for hiring a personal trainer?

DG: I really was committed to getting back in shape but I was realistic in knowing that I could not do it alone. I wanted someone who would push me that extra 5%. I knew I could work hard on my own but not hard enough and not long enough. If I really wanted to get the results that I was envisioning, I had to be truly committed and put my money where my mouth was.

JC: What kind of results did you expect to achieve with personal training?

DG: While I knew what I wanted to lose (25 - 30 pounds over four months), I did not think it was realistic. If I could have lost 15 pounds in 4 months, that would have been a good accomplishment.

JC: Amazingly, you lost 22 pounds, 22 inches and 10% body fat in little over 2 months...What in the world is going through your head after achieving these kinds of results in such a short period of time?  If you don't mind, can you tell everyone your before and after weight?

DG: You really want me to tell people my weight? Hmm. What the hell. My weight was 161.2 when I started. After my 8-week Sculpt & Strengthen - http://www.fitnessandresults.com/sculpt_and_strengthen.php sessions, I was down to 139.2. To put that in perspective, I went from a size 12 to a size 6 (which I have not worn since high school). To be honest, as I wrote in my note to you, I was flabbergasted, stunned, speechless -- you name it. I did not think that was possible ... but I ALSO felt so wonderful. I felt (and feel) so much more alive, healthy. It is WONDERFUL.

JC: How have your family, friends and co-workers responded to your transformation?

DG: Shock, utter shock. They have been very supportive (as you would expect) but every week, people just look at me and shake their heads as they see me pulling up my pants that are falling off of me. (I have not replenished my wardrobe quite yet).

JC: What do you feel are the most important tips you have learned during your training?

DG: If you are committed enough, anything is possible. But it has to be YOUR commitment. You have to be doing this because YOU want it and not because your spouse, significant other or family members want it. If you do not have the right reasons driving you, you are not going to get the results that you could. Also, do not worry about what anyone else can do. You may not be able to do a lot of a particular exercise when you start but as long as you try hard, that is all that matters. For example, during my first week, I did sit-ups for you and I was able to do 4. (Yes, as in, 1 .. 2 .. 3 .. 4). It may be pathetic for someone else but I used every ounce in my body to do even 4. Over time, you will make improvement if you really push yourself.

JC: How has nutrition played a role in your success?

DG: Huge. The reason I lost this weight (I think) is because I made transformation on three levels: (1) I went from working out 0 times a week to 10 times a week (cardio 7 days a week and 3 sessions with you); (2) I was drinking no water before and I am now drinking 65 - 80 ounces per week; and (3) I went from eating okay (but not great) most of the time to being VERY conscientious of my eating. I have my "free day" on Sunday but other than that, I am very strict.

JC: What is your advice for people who can't get motivated to exercise and have lost hope with their bodies?

DG: Do not lose hope. I know it is easy to say that from me but it is true. It is not going to be easy -- I am not going to lie to you but seriously, I am proof that if you make the full 100% commitment, ANYTHING and I do mean ANYTHING is possible.

JC: I know you have done hundreds of exercises while training, so it's probably difficult to pick just one...Though generally speaking, which one did you find the most challenging?   Which one are you most proud of?

DG: That is not a challenging question. The hardest one for me has been the jumping squats with the 5 pounds weights on each ankle. As you know because you seem me struggle, it is SO bleeping hard but I still persevere and do it every session. As for the one that I am most proud of, it is definitely a tie. First, I am just stunned by the change in my abdominal strength -- I had NO muscles (and that is an understatement) at the beginning, being able to do only 4 sit-ups. But now, I can do 20 sit-ups on a ball while throwing and catching a 12 pound weight. (It is insane). Second, I am shocked (and my husband is) about my improvement in push-ups. It is staggering.

JC: I've trained hundreds of people and your work ethic is best I have ever encountered.   What's your secret for pushing yourself harder each session?

DG: I am not sure that I have a secret. I just have the attitude of either go all the way or go home. Why do a half-a** job? It is a waste of my time and a waste of yours. I also think that after getting results the first week (which were very good), I got hooked and addicted. I liked losing the weight which made me push myself harder.

JC: After your fitness training with me is over, what are your goals to STAY in tip-top shape and workout independently for the future?

DG: You mean my training with you is not perpetual? Just kidding. I am going to stick to my new nutrition regimen and really stay in maintenance mode -- do cardio 4 - 5 times a week and do weights 2 - 3 times a week. My husband will be a big help with that -- he is so supportive.

I hope you enjoyed that...I sure as hell did!
