Enough with the Gimmicks Already
by Jim Coughlin
We all know that fitness infomercials are total scams. We all know they'll say or pay someone to say just about ANYTHING to get you to buy their worthless crap.
Yet what really irritates me to no end is to see fitness experts that you're supposed to trust going in this similar direction with the products they promote. Many act like they've got this special angle or twist that makes their program the best thing since sliced bread.
Yet 99.9% of the time this angle isn't something that will necessarily help the individual, but rather, it's something they know the consumer will want to hear to increase the chances of them buying their product.
The most blatant twist, angle, gimmick or whatever you want to call it, is the false impression these so-called gurus give you about cardio exercise. A lot like to say you DON'T need cardio and it's a complete waste of time.
I was just reading a post from a popular fitness buff the other day, who I won't name, with the title 'Cardio is a Joke.' To summarize, he goes on and on to explain how long, low-intensity cardio isn't necessary and all you REALLY need to do are his revolutionary strength training workouts 3x a week for 20 minutes at a time. That's it.
He then makes the analogy that if you were to look at people in an aerobics room they're all mostly fat and out of shape, yet if you look at individuals in the weight training room, you'll see more sculpted, leaner-looking bodies.
Now, if you were to look at things from his skewed point of view, he's partially right.
If all you did was low-intensity cardio and neglected strength training, then yes, you wouldn't really change your body much. And yeah, I would agree that strength training is more effective than cardio conditioning. Can't argue these points.
But where this guy goes horribly wrong is to say that "all you need are his revolutionary strength training workouts 3x a week for 20 minutes." It's quite obvious the only reason he's saying this is because he knows people will be enticed by the '3x a week for 20 minutes' hook.
I mean, who wouldn't want to workout 3x a week for 20 minutes at a time? I sure as he double hockey sticks would! :)
Yet the truth is - it's a bunch of horse manure. I don't care what kind of strength training you're doing 3 times a week for twenty minutes. It ain't enough to get you into tip-top shape.

Is this guy trying to tell me that if I were stick an overweight woman on a program that has her do strength training 3x a week for 20 minutes at a whack as opposed to have her doing a program of strength training 3x a week for 20 minutes AND doing cardio 4x a week for 30 minutes at a time...the woman would get BETTER results from the first routine?
You, me and this swindler all know the answer.
Yes, it may not be as sexy as the first routine, but we all know the truth. Even if you're walking 4x a week for 30 minutes at a time, it STILL is putting your body in a much better position to lose weight and get into better shape than JUST doing strength training.
Now, you'll eventually want to progress the walk to a walk-jog...then jog...then jog-run and so on, but the bottom line is...you absolutely, positively need cardio in addition to your strength training to get to the next level.
Please don't be fooled into believing you don't because chances are good, you're being sold a fraudulent 'solution' or 'gimmick' that is telling the lazy side of your brain what it wants to hear.
Now, it's possible you may think I'm one of these scammers too. You may think I'm shoveling the same shitaku (is that a word? lol :) as the rest of them. Yet the truth is, my program, The In-Home Personal Trainer isn't a gimmick and it doesn't have some B.S. angle or twist that tries to get over on you.
